The Cantii occupied the territory of modern Kent and maintained closer trading contact with Gaul than virtually any other British tribe — Caesar noted them specifically during his 55 and 54 BC expeditions. This bronze unit belongs to a phase of Cantian coinage that postdates direct Roman military pressure but precedes full provincial absorption, a period when local minting remained vigorous and relatively autonomous. The Mossop classification distinguishes this boar type from related issues by die linkage studies published in the 1980s.
