Cunobelin ruled from Camulodunum — modern Colchester — for roughly four decades, longer than any other pre-Roman British king, and his coinage reflects both the political ambition and the continental trade connections that made his kingdom the dominant force in southeastern Britain. Shakespeare's Cymbeline is a loose dramatization of his reign, though the historical figure died peacefully, well before Claudius launched the invasion of 43 AD that would finish what Cunobelin's own territorial expansion had made inevitable.
