The Leuci occupied territory in what is now the Lorraine region of northeastern Gaul, and their coinage is poorly documented compared to larger neighboring tribes. The magistrate name MATUGIINOS — alternatively read as MATUGENOS — appears on a small series of bronzes whose attribution to the Leuci rests primarily on find-spot concentration rather than any explicit tribal identifier. The name itself is Celtic, built on the root *matu- (bear) combined with a patronymic suffix, a naming convention that recurs across Gaulish inscriptions.
