The Arverni occupied the volcanic uplands of what is now the Auvergne, and by the second century BC had consolidated enough political authority to issue coinage under their own name — an uncommon explicitness among Gaulish peoples, most of whom struck anonymous types. The inscription IIPOS remains incompletely understood; it has been read as a magistrate's name, a mint signature, and a religious formula, with no scholarly consensus settled.
This series predates the catastrophic Roman campaigns that would eventually reduce the Arverni from the dominant power in Gaul to a client people after Vercingetorix's surrender at Alesia in 52 BC.
