Vodnjan (Italian: Dignano) sits in the Istrian interior, and its wartime bread coupons reflect the administrative bilingualism of a region that changed hands repeatedly — from Austria-Hungary to Italy after 1918, and later to Yugoslavia. The dual naming on this coupon, in both Croatian and Italian, points to a transitional moment when neither identity had been fully suppressed by the other.
Bread coupons of this type were municipal instruments of rationing, not currency, though they circulated as such when food shortages made controlled distribution more urgent than banking formality. Paper composition makes survival rates low.
