Obverse description Central field depicting the heraldic lion of Bologna (the leone rampante) rearing upright to the left, with a small shield bearing the city arms at upper left above the lion's raised forepaw. The beast is rendered in a bold, stylized medieval manner typical of hammered billon coinage. The circumferential legend reads BONONIA MATER, distributed around the coin's edge and separated by pellet stops. The coin's flan is irregular, as characteristic of hand-struck municipal issues of the period.
