The blanca issued jointly under Juan and Blanca of Navarre reflects one of the more unusual constitutional arrangements in Iberian history: Blanca II was the legitimate heir, but her marriage to Juan of Aragon made him co-ruler, a title he exercised with increasing dominance. When Blanca died in 1441, Juan refused to cede the kingdom to their son Carlos de Viana — triggering a civil war that would consume Navarre for decades. These coins predate that rupture, struck during the period when the partnership still held nominal legitimacy.
