| Beschrijving keerzijde | A plain pattee cross is centrally placed within a quadrefoil or curved inner circle, the four lobes of which frame the arms of the cross. The cross divides the inner field into four quadrants, each left plain. A circular legend in uncial Latin letters runs between the inner circle and the beaded outer border, invoking a common medieval pious formula. The reverse design follows the standard devotional type characteristic of French billon blancs of the period. |

Louis XI acquired Provence through the death of René of Anjou in 1480 and the subsequent inheritance by Charles du Maine, who died the following year leaving the county to the French crown. The sun of Provence on this issue was a deliberate political signal — an assertion of Valois authority over a territory that had only just passed into French hands, struck into the lowest circulating silver denomination to ensure maximum visibility among the population being absorbed.
