Obverse description Central field displays the royal arms of France semé of fleurs-de-lis on a shield surmounted by a Provencal crown, flanked by a single fleur-de-lis on each side, the entire composition enclosed within a raised trefoil border. The shield is rendered in the Gothic heraldic style characteristic of late Valois coinage. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding circumferential legend. The uncial Latin legend KAROLVS FRANCORVM REX L T runs around the outer border between two beaded circles, identifying Charles as king of the Franks.
