Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned royal arms of France, displaying three fleurs-de-lis on a shield surmounted by a crown, all set within an inner circle. The design is executed in the late medieval Gothic hammered style characteristic of French royal billon coinage. A circular legend in uncial Latin letters runs along the outer margin, reading LVDOVICVS FRANCORVM REX, identifying the issuer as Louis, King of the Franks. The coin shows the typical irregular flan associated with hand-struck medieval issues, with some weakness at the margins.
