背面描述 A leopard passant to the left, crowned, depicted in the bold and stylised manner of 14th-century Anglo-Gascon heraldic coinage, occupies the central field. The beast is surrounded by a scattering of trefoil or leaf ornaments in the field, lending the design a decorative heraldic quality. A circular legend in uncial lettering is disposed around the periphery within a beaded border, reading DVX AQITAnIE, proclaiming Edward's title as Duke of Aquitaine. The flan edges are irregular and slightly clipped in places, consistent with hammered production of the period. The overall style reflects the Anglo-French artistic conventions of the Plantagenet administration of Gascony.

附加信息

Edward III inherited Aquitaine through the tangled feudal obligations that would eventually ignite the Hundred Years' War. By 1337, Philip VI had formally confiscated the duchy, and Edward's response — claiming the French crown itself — meant these coins were struck in a political climate of active dispossession. Minting them was an act of defiance as much as administration.

The blanc denomination was introduced to compete with French royal issues circulating in the region, part of a broader currency war fought through the money supply rather than the battlefield.
