Obverse description Central field features the crowned shield of Lorraine, bearing the characteristic bend sinister with eagle and alerions, surmounted by a cross of Lorraine above the shield. The shield is surrounded by a beaded inner circle, with the ducal title legend disposed around the periphery in Gothic-influenced Latin lettering. The hammered flan is irregular in shape, as characteristic of mid-16th century Lorraine coinage.
