Obverse description A rampant lion passant to the left occupies the central field, rendered in a bold, slightly crude hammered style characteristic of minor lordship coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The beast holds aloft a pennant or banner in its raised forepaw. The figure is set within a beaded inner circle, around which the circular Latin legend reads MONETA NOVA ARGENT D I VV, identifying this as the new silver coinage of the Lordship of Vianen. The lettering is separated by pellet stops and disposed around the full circumference of the coin.
