Atella was one of the Campanian cities that defected to Hannibal following the Roman catastrophe at Cannae in 216 BC, and this bronze was struck during that period of Carthaginian alliance. Rome retook the city in 211 BC — the same year Capua fell — and effectively ended autonomous Atellan coinage permanently. The biunx denomination, valued at two unciae, reflects the city's integration into the broader Oscan-Campanian bronze weight standard rather than Roman aes grave traditions.
