| Reverse description | Two standing figures facing one another across a central patriarchal cross, which both jointly hold. On the left, Emperor Theodore I Laskaris is depicted crowned and wearing the imperial loros, holding a labarum in his outer hand. On the right, his patron Saint Theodore Stratelates stands in military attire, armed with a spear held in his outer hand. The juxtaposition of the reigning emperor and his heavenly intercessor is a hallmark of Nicaean imperial coin design, conveying divine legitimacy. The identifying inscription appears in the fields flanking the figures. |
