正面描述 Bare-headed draped bust of Ercole II d'Este in left profile, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curly hair and beard in the Renaissance manner. Below the truncation, a small heraldic castle device serves as the mintmaster's mark. The bust occupies the majority of the field, with the legend disposed along the inner border of a beaded outer rim. The numeral IIII appears prominently beneath the bust, denoting his rank as fourth Duke of Ferrara.

附加信息

Ercole II d'Este ruled Ferrara during one of the duchy's most diplomatically precarious stretches — caught between Habsburg pressure and French alliance, he had married Renée of France in 1528, a union that brought Protestant sympathizers directly into the Este court. Renée's Calvinist leanings caused persistent friction with Rome, and Ercole eventually compelled her to recant under Inquisition pressure in 1554. The bianco, a denomination common to several northern Italian states in this period, reflects Ferrara's effort to maintain credible silver coinage while the duchy's political footing remained anything but stable.
