Mehmed IV ascended the throne in 1648 at age six following the deposition and subsequent murder of his father Ibrahim I — one of the more violent transitions in Ottoman succession history. The beslik, a five-akçe piece, was a denomination caught between the collapsing akçe and the larger kuruş that would eventually replace the older silver system entirely. Aleppo's mint was among the more active provincial facilities during this period, serving the commercial traffic of the Levantine trade routes.
