Obverse description Central field features an ornate Armillary Sphere device rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of Portuguese Indian colonial coinage. The device is enclosed within a beaded or rope inner border, surrounded by a partial circular legend reading PHIL III REX PORTVGAL in Latin characters, referencing Philip III of Portugal. The overall fabric of the flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the edges, consistent with hand-cut planchets used at the Diu mint. The relief is uneven, reflecting the primitive striking conditions of the colonial workshop.
