| Beschrijving keerzijde | Full-length figure of the crowned Virgin Mary, standing facing, holding the Christ Child in her left arm, with a nimbus or halo visible above her head. The Virgin is depicted in flowing robes with stylized drapery. The circular legend surrounding the figure presents the opening words of the Angelic Salutation in abbreviated Latin. The composition is enclosed within a beaded border, consistent with the hammered technique of the period. |

Johann Franz von Schönau-Zell served as Prince-Bishop of Basel from 1651 until his death in 1656, a tenure so brief it produced only a handful of coin types. The Bishopric's minting rights were perpetually contested during this period — the city of Basel itself had broken from the Prince-Bishops ecclesiastically in 1529, leaving the temporal authority of the see confined to surrounding territories in the Sundgau and the Jura.
The two-year window reflected in this dating is narrow enough that surviving examples with clear dates carry a modest premium among specialists in Alsatian and Swiss episcopal coinage.
