Blarer von Wartensee became Prince-Bishop of Basel in 1575 and spent his episcopate aggressively implementing Counter-Reformation policy, expelling Protestant clergy and reasserting Catholic authority across what remained of his severely reduced territorial jurisdiction — much of the city of Basel itself had turned Reformed decades earlier. His coinage served the ecclesiastical administration centered at Porrentruy, where the bishop's court had effectively relocated.
The HMZ 2#117a attribution places this among a small, well-documented group of Batzen issues from his long reign, which stretched until 1608.
