Obverse description Central field displays the crowned municipal arms of Haguenau: a pointed shield bearing a stylized six-petalled rose with curling foliate lobes, rendered in relief against a plain shield ground. The shield is framed by a plain inner border and surrounded by a beaded outer rim. The circular Latin legend reads MONETA. ARGEN. CIVIT. HAGEN., identifying the piece as the silver coinage of the city of Haguenau, and is separated from the shield by a narrow flat field. The coin was struck by hammer on a roughly prepared flan, giving the piece its characteristic irregular surface texture.
