Thann's civic coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious autonomy within the Habsburg orbit — the right to strike silver was jealously guarded by towns of Alsace as a marker of municipal standing, even as imperial pressure steadily eroded local minting privileges throughout the sixteenth century. Thann itself was a secondary center, overshadowed by Colmar and Sélestat, and its batzen output was correspondingly modest.
The twelve-year span across this issue suggests production in irregular runs rather than continuous striking.
