Surrounding the central portrait, arranged within an ornamental wreath of laurel branches, are the names of the principal Austrian commanders of the 1848–1853 campaigns inscribed in the field: Radetzky, D'Aspre, Jellachich, Welden, Windischgrätz, Schlick, Haynau, and Hess, along with the imperial legend FRANZ JOSEPH I. KAIS. V. ÖSTERR.
