Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal arms of Scotland, featuring the rampant lion within a quartered shield surmounted by an open royal crown with arched bands. The shield is flanked by decorative floral or foliate elements typical of late 16th-century Scottish hammered coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border, incorporates the regnal numeral and date. The die work is characteristic of the Edinburgh Mint's production under James VI's sixth coinage issue.

Reverse description Central field depicts a balance scale with two pans suspended from a horizontal beam, above which a sword is shown upright, together symbolising justice and righteous governance. The device occupies the full inner field, with the scales' pans rendered in relief and small decorative elements visible at the terminations of the beam. A beaded inner border encircles the design, with the circumferential Latin legend running between the inner and outer borders. The emblematic composition, unique to the Balance coinage of James VI, carries the political message distinguishing a just king from a tyrant.
