James VI's sixth coinage was issued under considerable fiscal pressure — the Scottish crown was chronically short of bullion, and the fineness of silver coinage had been debased progressively across his earlier issues. The Balance series represented a partial corrective effort, with the thistle mark used to distinguish these pieces from the debased Hat coinage that preceded them. Spink 5491 is among the scarcer denominations of the group; the half merk saw more circulation than the full merk and surviving examples in decent condition reflect that.
