Ercole II d'Este ruled the Duchy through one of its most politically precarious stretches — a French alliance that kept Ferrara perpetually entangled in the Italian Wars while simultaneously drawing Habsburg suspicion. The bagattino was the lowest practical denomination in circulation, struck in copper specifically for small market transactions and alms, and Reggio Emilia maintained its own distinct civic coinage tradition even under Este lordship. These pieces circulated hard and were replaced often.
CNI IX documents considerable die variation across this twenty-five year issue, which is unsurprising given the length of the reign and the low prestige of the denomination.
