Additional information

Ercole II d'Este ruled the Duchy of Modena and Reggio as a cautious political operator, maintaining uneasy neutrality between France and the Habsburgs while his father-in-law, Francis I of France, pressed him repeatedly for military commitment. The bagattino was the lowest fractional denomination in everyday northern Italian commerce — the coin that changed hands for bread and small market transactions, which explains why survivors in any condition above heavily worn are genuinely scarce.

Reggio Emilia maintained its own mint throughout the Este period, operating with some independence from Modena.
