Obverse description The arms of the City of York on a central shield within a circular frame, inscribed YORK / 1866 below. Radiating from the centre are numerous allegorical figures representing the arts, sciences, and industries, including references to notable figures such as Flaxman R.A. and Etty R.A. in the field. At the top, a central allegorical female figure flanked by further allegorical groups with symbols of commerce, architecture, and the fine arts. Designer and maker signatures appear in the field: J. BELL DES. YORK and OTTLEY MEDALLIST BIRMO.
