Obverse description A highly detailed botanical scene in high relief depicting a diverse grouping of tropical and exotic plants, including broad-leafed banana plants, a palm, an agave, and large spreading trees filling the field. The engraver's signature B. WYON SC. appears in the lower right of the field, with the date 1839 in the exergue. The medal is fitted with a suspension loop at the top.

Reverse description The reverse features a large decorative wreath composed of roses, thistles, oak leaves, acorns, and other botanical elements, tied at the base with a ribbon bow and surmounted by a royal crown. The central field bears engraved award inscription. The legend ROYAL BOTANIC SOCIETY OF LONDON curves around the outer border, and the engraver's signature B. WYON appears at the bottom.
