The peripheral legend runs around the full circumference, with PATRONA. appearing in the lower field beneath the effigy.

Reverse description Minerva, helmeted and draped in classical robes, stands facing left in high relief, extending a laurel wreath in her left hand. She holds a rolled map or chart under her right arm, with a terrestrial globe leaning against her side and a sextant resting on the ground to the lower left. The engraver's signatures W. WYON A.R.A. and MINT. 1838. appear along the lower field. The legend OB TERRAS RECLUSAS arcs across the upper portion of the field, and ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY OF LONDON. is inscribed along the lower rim.
