Obverse description The obverse displays a large heraldic shield divided per pale, the dexter half bearing a diagonal band (bend) decorated with escallops, a bird in flight, and cinquefoils on a dotted field, the sinister half charged with a fretty or engrailed pattern and multiple keys. The shield is surrounded by an elaborate wreath of laurel and acanthus foliage with scrollwork, all in high relief against a plain field.

Reverse description The reverse features a large laurel and oak wreath tied at the base with a ribbon bow, enclosing an engraved central cartouche with the inscription identifying the award as the O.U.R.V. Exeter College Challenge Cup, won by Sergt. W.J. Stewart in 1869. The lettering is engraved in a mix of gothic and copperplate script styles.
