Obverse description A standing allegorical female figure in classical drapery gestures outward with both arms, holding a caduceus in her right hand, set before the iron-and-glass facade of the Crystal Palace. To her left stands a lamb symbolising industry, and to her right rests a Corinthian helmet beside a cog wheel and celestial globe, symbolising science. The legends INDUSTRY and SCIENCE appear on the gates flanking the figure, and the engraver's name PINCHES is inscribed in the lower exergue.
