Obverse description High-relief bust of Athena (Minerva) in left profile, wearing an ornately engraved classical helmet decorated with scrollwork and floral motifs, her flowing hair falling to the shoulder. A serpent is visible at the truncation of the neck, and a faint maker's signature appears in the lower field. The plain concave field and reeded border frame the effigy.

Reverse description The date 1876 in large numerals at centre, surrounded by an elaborate wreath composed of riverside flora including iris, bulrush, water lily, daffodil, and other flowers and foliage, all in high relief. A circular legend runs around the border, and the designer's signature G.R. CLARKE D. appears in the lower exergue.
