Obverse description The arms of the University of London displayed in high relief at centre, featuring a quartered shield with an open book in the upper quarter, a crown and a Tudor rose in the lower quarters, supported by two elaborate cartouche-style supporters with floral swags. The legend 'UNIVERSITY OF LONDON' arcs across the upper field and 'PRIZE MEDAL' along the lower, both separated from the rim by a border of alternating ovals and pellets. The engraver's signature 'B. WYON' appears at the base of the shield.

Reverse description The reverse features a laurel wreath in relief encircling the central field, within which the recipient's details are engraved: 'M.D. Branch IV (Midwifery and Diseases of Women)'. The outer legend around the rim reads 'JANE McALLISTER M.C.L.B.S.' at the top and 'DECEMBER 1861' at the bottom, separated by the same oval-and-pellet border as the obverse.
