Obverse description The quartered shield of arms of Mauritius occupies the central field, displaying a sailing ship in the first quarter, palm trees in the second, a key in the third, and a star in the fourth, with the motto scroll STELLA CLAVISQUE MARIS INDICI below. The shield is set against a decorative hatched background within a beaded border. The circular legend surrounding the design reads PRESENTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF MAURITIUS with the date 1876 at the base.
