Obverse description The arms of the Earl of Dufferin with two lion supporters, surmounted by an earl's coronet and flanked by maple leaf sprays, with a scroll motto reading PER VIAS RECTAS below. The circumferential legend reads PRESENTED BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR GENERAL, within a beaded border. The engravers' signature J.S. & A.B. WYON SC. appears in small lettering at the base of the design.

Two crossed flags appear in the field to left and right.
