Obverse description The arms of the City of Birmingham in high relief, featuring the quartered shield with supporters: a dexter figure of a blacksmith in armour and an apron holding a hammer, and a sinister female allegorical figure holding a palette and brushes. Above the shield is a mural crown with a clenched fist issuing from it. A ribbon scroll below bears the civic motto FORWARD. The maker's mark 'J·M' appears in the lower exergue.
