Additional information

Issued by the Macedonian Koinon during the reigns of Elagabalus through Severus Alexander, this gold piece commemorates the Olympia, the regional games administered by the Koinon that were distinct from — though consciously modeled on — the Panhellenic games at Olympia in Elis. The Koinon itself was an unusual survival: a federation of Macedonian cities operating with meaningful autonomy within the Roman provincial structure, maintaining its own assembly, coinage authority, and priestly offices centuries after the conquest of 168 BC.

Gold aurei from provincial koina are genuinely rare; most provincial civic gold was struck in very limited quantities for prize or ceremonial distribution rather than general circulation.
