| Obverse description | Bare-headed, laureate bust of Emperor Vitellius facing left, with a globe at the point of the neck, rendered in the naturalistic portraiture style characteristic of Julio-Claudian and early Flavian imperial coinage. The emperor's fleshy features and thick neck are depicted with notable realism, consistent with known portraiture of Vitellius. The encircling legend is incised in sharp relief around the periphery of the flan. The overall composition is typical of gold aurei struck during the brief reign of Vitellius in AD 69, the so-called Year of the Four Emperors. |
