In his raised right hand he carries a spear, while his left hand bears an aquila (legionary eagle standard) and a vexillum (military banner), potent symbols of Roman military cohesion and loyalty. The composition references the support of the legions that elevated Vitellius to the purple during the civil war of AD 69.
