| Reverse description | The god Mars, helmeted and depicted nearly nude save for a military cloak (paludamentum) billowing behind him, strides dynamically to the left in a martial pose. In his raised right hand he carries a spear, while his left hand bears an aquila (legionary eagle standard) and a vexillum (military banner), potent symbols of Roman military cohesion and loyalty. The composition references the support of the legions that elevated Vitellius to the purple during the civil war of AD 69. The legend encircles the reverse field, and a beaded border frames the design. |
