Gaius Vibius Varus served as a moneyer under the Second Triumvirate, issuing this aureus in the politically charged months following Caesar's assassination when Marcus Lepidus held the office of triumvir rei publicae constituendae alongside Antony and Octavian. Lepidus was the least powerful of the three from the outset — marginalized progressively until his forced retirement in 36 BC — yet his name appears prominently on issues like this one, a reflection of the carefully maintained fiction of equal partnership.
RRC 494/10 is among the scarcer Lepidus-associated aurei from this moneyer series.
