Struck in 71 AD to commemorate the Flavian triumph over Judaea, this aureus belongs to the substantial celebratory coinage issued following Vespasian and Titus's joint triumph of June 71 — one of the most lavish triumphal processions Rome had seen in generations, with spoils from the Temple in Jerusalem paraded through the city before an estimated crowd in the hundreds of thousands. The Jewish War had been both politically and financially transformative for Vespasian: it was his command of that campaign that positioned him for the imperial throne during the chaos of 69 AD.
The fiscus Iudaicus, a punitive tax levied on Jews throughout the empire following the destruction of the Temple, helped fund the very mint activity that produced issues like this one.
