Issued in 71 AD to mark the suppression of the Jewish revolt, this aureus belongs to the immediate propaganda response following Titus's destruction of Jerusalem and the sack of the Second Temple. The IVDAEA DEVICTA ("Judaea conquered") series was a deliberate imperial statement — Vespasian needed the victory badly, having built his claim to the purple almost entirely on military credibility after the chaos of 69 AD's four emperors. The Judaean war wasn't just a campaign; it was the political foundation of the Flavian dynasty.
RIC II.1 1119 is among the rarer IVDAEA DEVICTA aurei, with surviving examples numbering in the low dozens across major collections.
