| Reverse description | Hercules, fully nude and depicted in heroic contrapposto, stands facing left at center of the field. In his extended right hand he holds a patera over a small flaming altar set at his feet to the left, performing an act of sacrifice. His left hand rests on his knotted club, which leans against his body, while a lion skin is draped over his left forearm. The composition evokes Trajan's identification with the divine hero and his virtue, as propagated by imperial ideology. The encircling legend S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI runs around the periphery in Latin capitals within a beaded border. |
