| Reverse description | Three military standards (signa) stand upright side by side in the field, the central standard surmounted by a decorative eagle or finial with outstretched wings, while the flanking standards bear circular medallions (phalerae) and decorative elements on their shafts. The standards, emblematic of Roman legionary power and the honours bestowed upon Trajan by the Senate, are rendered in fine detail with transverse crossbars and hanging pendants. The legend S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI encircles the design, distributed around the coin's periphery. A beaded border frames the entire reverse design. The composition reflects the formal senatorial dedication to Trajan as Optimus Princeps, a title officially conferred upon him. |
