| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, rendered in fine high relief characteristic of the Trajanic period. The emperor's effigy displays a laurel wreath secured at the brow, with the paludamentum fastened at the right shoulder and draped across the chest. The portrait conveys a strong, idealized likeness with well-defined facial features and layered hair visible beneath the wreath. The encircling legend is incuse-struck in crisp Latin capitals along the inner border of the coin. |

Trajan's fifth consulship, held continuously from 103 AD, coincided with the peak of Roman imperial expansion — the Dacian campaigns concluded in 106 with the annexation of a province whose gold and silver mines flooded the treasury and made issues like this one possible at an extraordinary volume. The title OPTIMO PRINC, formally voted by the Senate, was unprecedented; no previous emperor had received it.
RIC II 145 is among the more frequently documented aurei of this broad emission, struck across nearly a decade of exceptional mint output funded directly by Dacian spoils.
