Trajan issued this aureus to honor his biological father, Marcus Ulpius Traianus, granting him posthumous deification — a deliberate act of dynastic legitimization at the opening of his reign. The elder Traianus had served as governor of Syria and commanded legions in the Jewish War under Vespasian, dying before his son's accession. The consecration coinage piggybacked on the enormous prestige of that military record while simultaneously anchoring Trajan's own authority in blood rather than adoption alone.
RIC II 763 is among the less frequently encountered pieces of the consecration series.
