背面描述 A Capricorn, the mythological sea-goat emblematic of Augustus and adopted by the Flavian dynasty, strides dynamically to the left, its scaled fish-tail curling behind and its forelimbs extended in vigorous motion. A terrestrial globe is depicted beneath the creature in the lower field, symbolizing universal Roman dominion. The composition is set within a beaded border, with the encircling titulary legend dividing across the upper and lower fields. The type consciously evokes Augustan dynastic imagery to legitimize Titus's reign.

附加信息

This aureus dates to the final months of Vespasian's reign or the very opening of Titus's sole rule — the tribunician and imperatorial numbering places it precisely at the transition point in 79 AD, the same year Vesuvius buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in August. Titus was already de facto co-ruler and had held the title of Caesar for years, but the coinage of this precise titulature reflects the rapid accumulation of honors as he consolidated sole power following Vespasian's death in June.

RIC II.1 #36 is a relatively rare emission within the Titus aureus series.
