By 272, Tetricus I was ruling an empire in name only. The Gallic Empire he inherited from Victorinus was hemorrhaging territory, plagued by military mutinies, and facing increasing pressure from Aurelian's reunification campaigns in the east. This aureus, struck at Treveri (modern Trier), dates to the period when Tetricus was issuing coinage in gold that his antoninianus output in billon made almost laughably debased by comparison.
Tetricus surrendered to Aurelian at the Battle of Châlons in 274 — and notably survived, living out his days as a provincial administrator in Italy. Aurei of his reign are rare; the Treveri mint's gold production was never prolific.
